My 11-year-old Scout was so excited to be going on his first hike-in camping trip with his Troop. The backpack was certainly spacious enough, and had plenty of compartments for his supplies. We liked the double draw string entry at the top, too. He wore it around the house for days in anticipation for the big event. On the morning of the trip, his Scout leader went to tighten his straps to ensure proper support and comfort. Two of the three main front clips snapped in half, leaving this support system completely useless. He hiked in (and out) carrying who knows how many pounds of stuff, all with the weight on his shoulders. He was miserable on the hike, and sore for many days.

Let me start by saying I’m a 6’0 tall 165lbs male and this is my first hiking pack. I have yet to seriously hike with this pack, but I have loaded it with 45lbs and walked around for a few hours. Everyone’s main complaint is the sleeping bag compartment being too small. Though I don’t see this beinging a problem since there are two external straps for such things and a rain cover to avoid a soggy sleeping bag. One complaint of mine is the rediculous length of the hip straps that hang to my knees when I have them adjusted all the way in, but that’s an easy fix. There are plenty of adjustment straps to make anyone comfortable. This pack is a great size for 2-5 day hikes, and is the best that I’ve found for a very reasonable price. One very cool feature is the side pockets that are actually not attached in the center, allowing for very tall water bottles or possibly tent poles on the sides. That being said this is a quality made and well thought out hiking pack.
The pack is just as advertised, well made and receipt was timely and trouble-free. It has lots of pockets and good strong zippers. I love that the separator between the two main compartments is also zippered so that I can use it to carry larger things, like my baritone horn! Comfortable and adjustable. Not bad for a great price!

The material is tough enough, the rain cover is useful when it’s raining, and most of the pockets are large enough to hold things you need to get at in a hurry. However, the “sleeping bag” compartment at the bottom of the pack is only large enough to hold a child’s sized sleep bag. Even with a decent compression sack I was not able to stuff my sleeping bag in there. Luckily, the thing comes with plenty of external straps, but in future versions of this bag, Teton would be wise to make that sleep bag compartment just a bit bigger.
Overall, a good value if you can get it below $60.
