This DVD may be a nice collection of classic Mickey for adults, but it isn’t a good choice for many of today’s little kids. My 3 1/2 year old Mickey Mouse Clubhouse fan saw this video in the store and wanted it, but I was reluctant to buy it since I knew these older cartoons would be different in style and tone from the ones she watches on the Disney channel. I bought it anyway, thinking that “Best Pals Mickey & Minnie” would probably contain material about Mickey & Minnie’s friendship and adventures together and might be fun to watch. Turns out that wasn’t really the case so much.
First of all, as another reviewer stated, only three of the eight cartoons are about Minnie and Mickey. The others are mostly about Pluto and/or Figaro, although they do contain minor footage of Mickey or Minnie.
Secondly, as another reviewer also mentioned, all these cartoons definitely contain the slapstick violence and negative/insensitive behaviors that are common in classic cartoons. In one episode, Minnie is angry with Figaro and chases him around trying to whack him with a broom. May not seem like a big deal to some, but my daughter was taken aback — that wasn’t like the Minnie she knows and loves. There were some nice moments here and there, but there were many other moments when I cringed and my daughter was visibly concerned seeing the characters tease, frighten, and inflict injuries upon each other.
Finally, I was surprised at some of the content, even considering when these were made. In one cartoon, Mickey and Minnie are watching a Vaudeville show about a young girl pleading with her drunk father to come home from the bar to take care of the family. In one scene he appears to push her face away while taking a swig from his bottle. Minnie is sobbing while watching this show, and it was disturbing for my daughter to watch all this.
Certainly not every child nor every parent will be disturbed by these cartoons. But if you have a sensitive child, or if you just prefer to have your young kids spend their TV time watching shows that model more positive behaviors, then leave this one for the adults and stick with the recent Mickey Mouse Clubhouse videos or choose others.
I picked this DVD up at Target yesterday for my 4 and 2 year olds. This DVD was very disturbing to my children. With all the violence, typical also of Warner Brothers, it really should be rated PG-13. First of all, the 1950′s was an era (error) of celebrating violence and bullying as fun and comedy. As a child growing up with this too in the 1960′s, I never thought it was funny either. I did not like getting bullied at school and I’m sure that kids didn’t like it when I beat the hell out of them either after getting bullied. But this is what I learned from such shows as Popeye, etc.
Review of each short:
First Aiders was fairly ok and was more just teasing, but with some unfortunate events that resulted.
Bath Day promotes gang violence (gang of cats) and was very scary to my children.
Pluto and Gopher were ok, but Minnie’s home is destroyed.
Figaro and Frankie absolutely terrified my kids with Butch the Bulldog’s teeth and fangs enlarged full screen. My daughter was dismayed that Minnie was crying after she thought her pet bird, Frankie, had been killed and eaten by the cat, Figaro. My daughter said “Mickey’s crying.” At this point, my 4 year old told pushed the EJECT button, and said he didn’t like this DVD. We won’t be watching it again.
I know a lot of people have posted positive reviews on this DVD as they have happy memories of watching these cartoons as children. I didn’t grow up seeing any of these, and have no attachments and can view them more objectively because of that. These simply are not appropriate for children as they are comedy based on negative behaviors (hitting, chasing, teasing, lying, pretending to be innocent, gang violence and bullying). Not good messages for kids. As an exhausted mom who has done no less than 1000 time-outs for my kids for when they hit over last 3 years, I do not appreciate them viewing a DVD that promotes this behavior. I realize it’s human nature to hurt others unfortunately, but the victim does not find it funny at all and it’s not funny to watch. Stick with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse series instead. I record those to TIVO and we have the GREAT CLUBHOUSE HUNT DVD. These are modernized and there is no violence or disrespect promoted.
Other DVD’s I recommend for young children (I have all in each series almost so have specified the best):
Maisy (Good Morning, Good Night & Playtime)
Dora the Explorer (Fairytale Advertures and Dora saves the Mermaids are best)
Bob the Builder (Snowed Under & Build It and They Will Come are best ones)
Teletubbies (all but Here Come the Teletubbies is favorite with kids)
Winnie the Pooh (all 4 in Friendship Series)
The Alphabet Train
Wiggles Big Red Car (don’t bother with other DVDs that duplicate)
Cars (except for some language like “stupid”, “idiot” and “moron”)
Ratatouille (except for gun fire by old woman trying to kill mice)
Leap Frog (5 pack Factory Series)
Baby Einstein (box set of 15 – I got mine off eBay for $[...] as hard to find)
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Hunt
Barney Let’s Play School
Thomas the Tank Engine Calling All Engines
Angelina Ballerina The Silver Locket
Kipper (all of them are loved by my kids)
Hope my recommendations help. We are about to view Stuart Little 2 and Charlotte’s Web and will review those next.
On April 11 an awsome one disc set named Best Pals: Mickey & Minnie will be released. The cartoons will be First Aiders (1944), Bath Day (1946), Pluto and the Gopher (1950), Figaro and Frankie (1947), Mickey’s Rival (1936), The Nifty Nineties (1941), Pluto’s Sweater (1949) and Mickey’s Delayed Date (1947). The DVD is 57 minutes. Each cartoon may also be played in French. Enjoy!
My children are really enjoying all the cartoons with Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto. It is money well spent! No one does it like Walt Disney! They are fun to watch at any age and so much better than the garbage they call cartoons today.

I wasn’t sure how my 2 yr old daughter would like it, since she is used to the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse DVD’s, but she loves these just as much…her eyes are glued to the screen!
